Fairplay, CO: It is the most important equipment a
firefighter needs when responding to major emergencies. But for
North-West firefighters, budget constraints have prevented them from
having the newest, most effective models.
Now, Fireman's Fund Insurance Company is providing a $17,000 grant to
pay for 10 new sets of turnout gear that meet National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) standards.
Turnout gear is the protective, fire-resistant clothing that
firefighters wear when responding to incidents like fires or major
vehicle crashes. The clothing protects them from exposure to
chemicals, heat or flames. Many of the department's firefighters use
clothing that is old and ineffective.
"Turnout gear is crucial for protecting our firefighters and this
money will enable us to replace the most worn pieces," said Fire Chief
Mike Roll. "These new sets will last for several years and help
protect us during countless emergencies."
Chief Roll, North-West firefighters, and Fireman's Fund employees will
come together for a special public event where the grant package will
be presented.

The equipment is being paid for by Fireman's Fund, which provides
grants to fire departments through its Fireman's Fund Heritage
program. As part of this initiative, every employee is able to
nominate a fire department for a grant. A special regional task force
of employees and agents reviews the nominations and selects winners.
Phyllis Stilson, who works in the Denver regional office, helped
nominate North-West Fire.
"Residents in the North-West Fire Protection District are fortunate to
have so many paid and volunteer firefighters dedicated to protecting
the area," said Stilson. "It's critical we provide them with the best
turnout gear available so they're safe while working to help all of
us."
