Badger Mountain Fire Lookout Tower/50th Anniversary: If you're a fire tower/history buff you can't miss this! Come meet Bill Ellis, who mans the Devil's Head Fire Lookout Tower in the South Platte District. Bill will teach you how fires are spotted and reported on Badger Mountain's original fire finder viewer. Hear some wild stories and even some tall tales and legends from the insider circle. Pamphlets and a fire scavenger hunt game will be available all day. Bison Weekend: Learn
the difference between buffalo and bison, talk to people who have worked with
bison and see bison products. Learn why bison were a critical staple to Native American Indians. Bluebird Monitoring: Take a peek at our bluebirds with us as we do our weekly monitoring. See a bluebird’s nest and eggs up close. Assist us with our monitoring and recording! Fire Awareness: Increase your fire awareness by seeing how fires burn in various types of fuels. Learn about fire fuels and the variables that contribute to fire danger. Humdingers: See our hummingbirds up close as you learn about their behavior and interesting fast paced lives. Don’t forget your camera! Leave NO Trace: What is the proper way to use the restroom in the Wilderness? Can I camp next to a stream? Is it ok to leave apple cores for the animals to eat? All these questions and more will be answered during this program. Linda Bjorklund: Meet a local author famous for her books: "Gold in the Gravel" and "Hartsel: History of a Town." Linda will be available for signing books and photos in full character and costume. Miners and Minerals: After meeting author Linda Bjorklund, try to pan for gold or other fine minerals/rocks in our makeshift stream. Everyone will walk away with something! See a personal collection of rocks, minerals and fossils. Pick up your free gold panning and rock hunting information handouts. Morning Bird Hike: Keep your eyes peeled for velvet green swallows, mountain bluebirds, chickadees, juncos, nuthatches, hummingbirds, finches, hairy woodpeckers and more. Learn basic birding techniques, bluebird monitoring, and how to attract hummingbirds and songbirds to YOUR house! Mountain Man: Learn about mountain men/women and their difficult survivals in the wild! Our mountain man/woman specialist will be on site and in costume for hands on activities, tales, interesting information and questions. Nature Awareness: Look at nature up close, far away, and using our senses to get a different prospective on our natural surroundings. Participate in nature role-playing and learn how to start a nature journal. A great program for people of all ages! Nature, Nature Crafts: Make beaded necklaces, sage sticks, nature journals, bookmarks, paint rocks and much more!!! Fun crafts for people of all ages!!! Pioneer Programs: Learn about local Colorado heroes, men and women. Hear stories and tales, while meeting characters in costume. Puma Point Sunset: Wear your comfortable shoes for a hike to one of the most beautiful spots to view a wonderful sunset.Learn interesting facts about our sun and hear sun related Native American stories and legends. Don’t miss this wonderful photo opportunity. Please bring water and a flashlight or headlamp for the half-mile hike back to the parking lot. Don’t forget a camera!!! Rocks and Minerals: Come look at a spectacular rock collection and learn how to identify different minerals and rocks. Did you know calcite comes in many different colors and varieties? How do you know if it's really calcite? Where can you go to collect rocks and minerals on public lands? Lots of handout materials will be available to take home for free! Scats N Tracks: See a great scat collection, make your own identification track sheet and hike the Puma Point Trail and participate in our scat n tracks scavenger hunt! Short Nature Hike: This 15 – 20 minute short Forest Service interpreter-guided hike is great for people of all ages. Walk up the paved sidewalk to the beautiful lookout point and learn about the local fauna, wildlife and history of Wilkerson Pass. Smokey Bear 60th Anniversary Celebration: Help us celebrate Smokey Bear's 60th Anniversary! Learn about forest fires, fire safety, and what you can do to help Smokey Bear protect our forests and friends. If you complete Smokey Bear's program you'll receive a Smokey Bear packet packed with Smokey Bear items. Meet Smokey Bear himself and have your picture taken with him! Smokey Bear Coloring and game sheets will be available throughout the day. Tree-ific Trees: Learn to connect with trees on a more personal level by becoming an aspen tree, interviewing a tree, reading their life rings and feeling what they feel. A great program for people of all ages! VFW: The Lake George VFW promotes driving safety during the summer holiday weekends. Stop by for a quick “pick-me-up” of cookies, coffee and punch to ensure you’re wide awake for the holiday traffic. Who Polluted the Platte?: Take part in a hands-on story line and find out who really polluted the Platte River!!!!! Wilderness Wheel of Fortune: This irresistible game has every one of all ages mesmerized! Spin the wheel and take a guess at wilderness related questions. Get a question right and win a small prize! Wildflower Hike: Learn to identify our wonderful wildflowers at Wilkerson Pass along the Puma Point Trail. Each month brings in a new batch, as the seasonal cycle is always changing.
