Press Release: North-West Fire Protection District Fairplay, Colorado
At approximately 3:15 pm on February 10, 2009 Engine 41 of North-West Fire Protection District was involved in a rollover accident on Colorado State Highway 9 near Park County Road 14. The engine was returning from Fairplay to its station in Alma after being fueled and was not involved in an emergency response at the time of the accident. No other vehicles were involved.
The driver was the only occupant of the fire engine, was wearing a seatbelt, and was uninjured. The severity of the damage to the engine will be investigated by mechanics from the manufacturer and repairs will be determined from their assessment. All of the damage appears to have occurred to the passenger side of the vehicle.
Witnesses have told fire officials that the driver did an outstanding job of making sure no other vehicle became involved as there were at least 3 other cars around when the engine began to slide. The driver was able to get the engine out of the way of oncoming traffic as the slide was corrected. The engine then went onto the shoulder and hit the embankment, causing it to roll onto its side.
"One of North-West's reserve engines is now in service at the Alma station so emergency services will not be hindered while this engine is out of service for repairs" according to Chief Mike Roll. "We are just thankful no one was hurt. This could have been much worse, but everyone is safe and was able to walk away. We can repair the equipment, it is the people that matter most"
