First, some background…
Susan Pullman has lived in Colorado for 50 years and husband Jack is a Colorado native from Leadville. The Pullmans decided almost 14 years ago that a rural environment would suit them better than more populated areas, so they moved to Park County in 1992. Susan and Jack have a grown son, Tory, daughter-in-law, and "two gorgeous grandchildren," Susan says with obvious pride.
Both Susan and Jack have been active in politics in the county since moving here and have held positions in the Park County Republican Party. Jack is employed at Lockheed Martin as a Systems Engineer. Susan's professional background for the last 25 years has been in the field of finance and budget. She started out as a tax preparer for Certified Public Accountants and tax firms. Following that, Susan moved on to work as an industrial engineer. The job involved efficiency and cost analysis used to prepare computerized estimates for proposed contract work. The job then grew into a cost management and financial analysis position. The new responsibilities involved a focus on budgeting and compliance with reporting requirements to the various government agencies that were often the customers of Susan's corporate employers.
Questions and Answers…
Q: Why did you decide to run for the office of Park County Treasurer and Public Trustee?
A: After working in the corporate world for 25+ years, I am ready to start a new career direction, one on which I can have an impact. I feel this is a good opportunity at the right time. I think that my financial background and past experience working with government entities would benefit the Treasurer's office. And, I would again like to work in the county where I live.
Q: What changes would you make in the Treasurer's office, or what would you do differently, if elected?
A: As someone who has always worked outside of government, I would try to bring a new perspective. My experience is in the contractor environment, working with government agencies but not for the government. These corporations were operating in a competitive marketplace, requiring them to introduce efficiencies to compete with other companies. I don't believe in change just for the sake of change, but, from my experience, there are often areas that could benefit from a new approach. I would look at all positions and tasks to see if efficiency can be improved. I would also want to evaluate the system software currently in use to see if it is adequate or if upgrades should be considered.
Q: Why are you best qualified for this position?
A: I have more than 25 years in financial and budgeting fields. My experience includes managing multi-billion dollar contracts requiring coordination with and presentation of reports to others within the company as well as with the customer.
Q: Now, a more philosophical question. What is your attitude toward our county government? Is Park County government too big, too small, or just right?
A: Being a conservative, I believe that government should play a smaller rather than larger role in people's lives. Our county government is the right size for right now and the level of services provided is adequate for current needs. Government should run as efficiently as possible while keeping the taxpayer in mind.
