On June 18, 2002, a recall committee comprised of Bailey residents Shirley Franklin, Mike Melendez and Joe Williams submitted two petitions to the Park County Clerk and Recorder. Their intent stated in the petitions was to recall Commissioners Don Staples (District I) and Leni Walker (District II). County Clerk Debra Green returned the petitions to the committee to correct errors and the petitions were resubmitted on June 20 and certified by the clerk on June 21.
Today - June 25 - four days later, the committee rescinded the petitions. A fax received by the clerk's office this morning notified the county clerk of the committee's withdrawal from completing the petition process. They gave as their reasons for withdrawing, the recent fires, timing issues, and personal and health issues.
It's uncertain as to the effect that "recent fires" have on this withdrawal by the committee as the Hayman fire was in full swing at the time the petitions were filed.
