Colorado Division of Wildlife to Begin Spring Release of Canada Lynx

"For the sixth year, the Colorado Division of Wildlife will release Canada lynx into the San Juan Mountains during April as part of its ongoing program to re-establish the cats in the state.

A total of 14 lynx, all from the Yukon Territory and British Columbia, will be released during April. The first four cats will be released Saturday, April 1, north of the town of South Fork in southern Colorado. The DOW also released lynx into the wild in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2005. After April, the DOW will have released a total of 218 lynx in Colorado.

The lynx are adapting well to the heavily-wooded, high-altitude terrain in the southern and central mountains. Colorado is the southern end of the historic range of the big-footed felines. DOW biologists estimate that about 150 to 200 lynx are now roaming the mountains. "
