CALHAN, Colo. - The Pikes Peak Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF), along with support from Colorado Parks and Wildlife and several other organizations, is hosting a M.U.L.E.Y. Kids' Day.

M.U.L.E.Y. Kids are Mindful, Understanding, Legal and Ethical Youth. M.U.L.E.Y. Kids' Day is an introduction to shooting sports and wildlife conservation for children seven to 17 years old.

"The kids will have a blast!" said Weldon Flaharty, MDF Chapter Chairman. "We had 174 kids last year and have many more activities and volunteers this year. This event gets bigger and better every year."

There will be a variety of activities including cowboy action shooting demonstrations, BB gun shooting, .22 rifle shooting, shotgun shooting, black powder shooting and archery. Gun safety will be immersed into every event. Colorado Parks and Wildlife will provide the Operation Game Thief trailer and Laser Shot booth where kids will learn hunting ethics. District Wildlife Manager Philip Gurule will also present a deer conservation class and radio collar telemetry course.

"Part of getting involved in hunting is learning why we do what we do and how it helps manage healthy wildlife populations," said Gurule.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., May 10, at Rocky Mountain Roosters, 19184 County Road 78, Calhan.

Cost is $10 per child, if pre-registered, or $20 at the door. Registration includes M.U.L.E.Y. hat, Mule Deer Foundation Youth Membership, lunch, beverages, equipment and ammunition. Cost for adults is $5 to cover lunch and beverages. A parent, guardian or responsible adult must be present for the entire day.

The MDF is a non-profit wildlife conservation organization with a mission to safely introduce youth to shooting sports, ensuring the sport's continued growth. Other organizations involved in the event are Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Colorado Springs Junior Olympic Archery Development, National Wild Turkey Federation, Colorado Springs Muzzle Loaders, Colorado Shaketails Cowboy Action Shooters, Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, 4-H, Wildflower Ridge Llamas, Elk Ridge Taxidermy and Eddy Eagle from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
