Post The Joke of Park County Clerk Debra Green's FEES
The recent article about Clerk Green giving out free postcards to send complaints to Gov Ritter is such a joke considering her background. Debra Green always stood up at county political meetings and bragged that she was important to the county government because of all the fees she collected from citizens. The article doesn't talk about how she raised late fees to $10 back in 2006 when she didn't have to. It was the highest fee allowed by law and she didn't have to collect one at all. She couldn't even always keep the money because of limitations on how much the government can take from people and spend but she took it anyway because she could. Some of us know why.

Some thought it was a bad thing for the Clerk to do to their own neighbors when she didn't have to take the money. The worst example was the guy who got shot because he got mad about the fee. He left the clerk's office but they hunted him down anyway. He shouldn't have fought with the deputies, but it started over the money-grubbing clerk.

Old news article

"According to Park County Undersheriff Monte Gore, Talbert
had already left the Clerk?s office and was heading north
toward Alma.
CBI ran a criminal check on Talbert but found no criminal
history. "

They cleared the cops of wrongdoing but the only witnesses were the cops led by Monte Gore. Maybe they were justified but there will always be that question of what really happened when Talbert was shot and killed after the temper tantrum about the late fee and whether the clerk pushed the panic button because she just wanted to win the argument. Would Talbert want to die for a few marijuana plants or a late fee?

It's just a joke or a campaign stunt that Clerk Green would encourage people to complain to Gov Ritter about his fees. She is up for reelection next year.

Some of us haven't forgotten Debra's unneeded fee collections from her own neighbors in the past. At least Ritter says he has a reason for his.

To our County Clerk Debra Green: Stop wasting our tax money on everything, including hiring your own relatives, but especially on complaints to the governor for the same things you're guilty of yourself. :( You definitely need to be replaced.

Very good points, rr. I do remember that episode. Did you see that the Denver Post thought it was a big enough deal and the clerk's actions were offensive enough to write an Op-Ed on it?

editorial - Clerks' postcard politics a petty use of tax money It's OK that two county clerks want to help citizens vent their frustrations over new license fees - but not with public funds. By The Denver Post

They should know the full story of the clerk wasting taxpayer dollars.

Most were convinced that the clerk would raise all fees to the maximum the law would allow if her fees were exempted from TABOR restrictions. That would be true of all of the departments. When you de-Bruce their fees they collect every cent they can get because they get to keep it. They used to charge about $1.25 or $1.50 for a single page copy of a document. A plain old photocopy. That was what the law allowed even though it kept people from getting copies of public information. The law was changed to .25 per copy which is a little more reasonable. But when it was too high, the clerk collected the most she could get. It makes no sense except just to exercise the maximum control over people and money. The documents belong to the public but the clerk thinks everything belongs to her, maybe.
